At startup, there may be a bit of exhaust smoke, but a prolonged amount is indicative of a problem. This may also cause backfiring out of the exhaust.
It is also possible to have backfiring occur through the air intake. A backfire through the carb is most likely indicative of a lean mixture. The uneven burn of a lean condition can carry ignition back through the opening intake valve and into the carburetor. This can be caused by the choke opening too early before the engine is warmed up.
This can be reinforced when the engine stalls right as you open the choke. However, the fact that the engine runs with the choke on proves that the choke is working. This problem is probably more likely due to a restriction blocking fuel from getting into the carburetor.
If the choke is malfunctioning, it may be due to the linkage being out of adjustment. The cable has threaded adjustments to tune the opening and closing of the choke. There are return springs that will pull against the cable, so a bad cable could keep slipping out of the selected position. Sometimes the cable can stick or even seize making it difficult to operate.
It is possible to replace the choke plate and other components, but it requires disassembling the carburetor. However, some components can be replaced.
The most common is the choke linkage. This is usually a lever and cable or a spring-loaded plunger. These are the mechanisms by which the rider can control the choke. In the case of an electrically controlled choke, there is a solenoid that can short internally and can also be replaced. Replacing the choke linkage will typically require gaining access to the carburetor. If your motorcycle has body panels that enclose the carburetor, start by removing those as needed.
It may also be necessary to remove the air cleaner depending on the bike design. On some designs, it will be necessary to remove the carburetor. Study up on what your bike needs and make preparations. The replacement of the cable is usually straightforward. It may require loosening a few threaded fittings on the handle side and the choke side. Once the link is replaced, put any pieces previously removed back on. Test the cable by actuating it before starting the bike.
If it appears to be functioning, try starting up the bike and actuating the choke. Another component that can break is the choke lever arm. You take the bike out start it up, and immediately when you take the choke off the engine dies?
This problem can usually be attributed to a clogged pilot jet. A pilot jet is an orifice in the carburetor which supplies fuel to the engine at low throttle conditions. However once you push the choke in, all that air rushes in and creates a lean fuel mixture. The engine struggles to create power and dies.
Function of a Motorcycle Choke A choke is used to help engines start. How to Use the Choke Learning to use a choke can sound like challenge to new riders, but its actually very simple. The choke is shown in the closed position not restricting air flow When you go to start your motorcycle you should pull the choke out as shown in the image below. When Should the Choke Be Used? The chock lever mechanism works to increase fuel or decrease the air ratio in the supply. Thus the chock instantly riches the air-fuel mixture and helps to quick ignition in cold engine. So that is the purpose or roll of a chock lever. In carburetor, choke lever riches the air-fuel mixture and helps for cold starting in morning or while starting for first in a day or after a long-unused period. But here the question is how the choke works?
In carburetor the air-fuel mixture ratio is fixed but can be tuned. It works in a mechanical sequence operated by the throttle. But here there is no automatic mechanism to change the ratio according to weather or other relative conditions. So in such situation when cold engine or weather requires for higher or rich ratio of air-fuel mixture than carburetor choke does it mechanically.
The basic technology we also mentioned earlier as it increases fuel supply or decreases the airflow. In the old model carburetors choke operates a smaller gate or butterfly wing against the throttle butterfly gate or valve. It makes a barrier to the airflow gate to reduce airflow but the fuel flow stays constant.
So the fuel ratio increases in terms of lower flow of air. But in new model carburetors the main flow of air and fuel stay constant according to throttle.
So when the choke lever pulled, there a valve opened in the main air intake hole. The whole directly goes through the carburetor fuel reserve bucket. Therefore when the choke lever pulled the valve opens its lid and air inhaled through this lid. It directly sucks the fuel from bucket due to piston vacuum pressure or venture effect. It feeds this excess fuel to the regular air-fuel mixture flow before the engine intake manifold. Therefore in both model of carburetor the fuel ratio increases in the mixture and makes it rich.
And this works for fast and quick ignition in cold engine and weather situation. Thus the choke works increasing the fuel ratio. We many time faces the frequent question on choke that is does it harms frequent choking? The answer is NO. Starting the cold engine or in cold weather or in other situation is not harmful.
