I don't have any animals due to sensitivities. However, I think it is similar to how many kids should you have. With all animals 4 legged, 2 legged, etc. I think it should be based on a combination of how many do you want and how many can you take care of in terms of time, money, space and so on. You might want to have lots of cats, but if you live in a studio apartment, that won't work. Maybe you'd like to have a dozen children, but you can't afford more than 2 or 3 or the kids and the dog will be eating kibbles and bits out of the same bowls.
